How to Choose Your First BJJ Gi: Size, Fit and Fabric

Buying your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi can feel confusing. Size labels, fabric weights, different cuts—where do you start?

Focus on three things: a fit that lets you move comfortably, construction made for grappling, and care instructions you can follow between training sessions. This guide will help you choose your first BJJ gi with confidence.

Start with Your Academy’s Requirements

Before buying, ask your coach whether your academy has requirements for gi colours, patches, or uniforms.

Choose a gi designed for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The jacket, collar, and reinforced areas need to handle the pulling and gripping involved in training.

If you plan to compete, check your event organiser’s current uniform requirements before choosing a gi. A gi suitable for everyday classes may not meet every competition’s rules.

Choose Your Size Using Measurements

BJJ gi sizes are different from everyday clothing sizes. Adult sizes often use labels such as A0, A1, A2, and A3, while some ranges offer different cuts or sizing systems.

Always use the size chart for the specific gi you want. Your size in one brand or model may not be the same in another.

Start with your height and weight. If the chart includes garment measurements, check those too. Shoulder width, chest size, and arm and leg length can affect the fit.

If your height and weight fall into different size categories, ask for advice before ordering. Moving up a size may add length as well as room through the body.

Check How the Gi Moves with You

A good training fit gives you room to move without excessive loose fabric.

When trying on your gi:

  • Reach forward and raise your arms to check the shoulders.

  • Squat and lift your knees to check the trousers.

  • Cross the jacket comfortably and tie your belt.

  • Check that sleeves and trouser legs do not cover your hands or drag on the floor.

The jacket should not pull tightly across your back, and the trousers should not restrict your hips or knees. Remember to allow for any shrinkage described by the manufacturer.

Try it on before washing, and check the return conditions before removing tags or training in it.

Understand Fabric Weight and Weave

You may see jacket fabric described in GSM, meaning grams per square metre. This measures fabric weight—not the total weight of the complete gi.

Lower-GSM fabric is generally lighter. Higher-GSM fabric generally feels heavier, although the weave, material, and construction also affect how the gi feels.

For beginners, comfort matters more than chasing a particular number. Consider your training environment and whether you prefer a lighter or more substantial jacket.

Pearl weave is a common option that balances weight and durability. Look at the complete construction too: reinforced seams, a securely attached collar, and well-finished trousers all matter.

Plan for Washing and Drying

Read the care label before the first wash. Many gis recommend cold washing and air drying, but instructions vary by model.

Do not assume that “pre-shrunk” means a gi cannot shrink further. Avoid using heat to force a poorly fitting gi into your size unless the manufacturer specifically advises it.

Wash your gi after each training session and let it dry completely before storing it. In humid weather, allow enough drying time and use a well-ventilated space.

If you train frequently, a second gi can make it easier to have a clean, dry uniform ready for your next class.

Keep Your First Purchase Simple

Your first gi does not need to be the most expensive option. Prioritise the right size, comfortable movement, and reliable construction.

Check whether a belt is included so you know what you need before your first session.

Before ordering, make sure you have:

  • Checked your academy’s uniform requirements.

  • Compared your measurements with the product’s size chart.

  • Read the fabric details and care instructions.

  • Checked what is included and the return conditions.
